The importance of effective instruction

Dr. Roy Jensen

I am currently working to lead development of quality courses within the Canadian security industry. There are zero training standards beyond basic security training (BST), and the standards for BST are low. Some provinces do not even require BST!

As a result of the non-existent standards for courses and instructors, I discovered what any experienced instructor would expect:

  • courses where everyone passes (CBR)
  • instructors who only teach through lecture
  • online courses that do nothing but have learners read the manual
  • MC exam questions where the correct answer is glaringly obvious
  • …

So I am now contributing to the edification of the industry and instructors.

A document presenting course development best practices (and touching on instructional best practices).

A document explaining the problem with in-house training.

A document explaining training frameworks and the accreditation process. CAšŸSP‘s is starting this process by establishing an industry working group to develop the training framework.

A research document on the efficacy of instructional modalities. Very interesting results!
