CAšSP is increasing awareness of issues in the security industry from several perspectives:
Injuries: research shows that security guards are assaulted FIVE times more frequently than workers, and HALF the rate of police.
Role: security guards are taking on roles that were previously the purview of the police: patrolling high-risk areas, walking beats, enforcing bylaws, issuing transit tickets, trespassing individuals, responding to alarms, etc. Yet these guards are not trained for these roles. Guards train for one week. Police train for one year.
Liability: in 2026, a BC court fined a security company and the client 1.8M for false arrest and assaulting a patron. In his ruling, the judge identified “negligent training” as the root cause of the guards actions.
Government: by publishing the above, governments can no longer claim ignorance, making them liable.
Insurance: approaching insurance companies with the above allows them to set premiums accordingly. This is not without precedent ā several major accidents in the trucking industry resulted in insurance companies adjusting their premiums to the point of making additional training the better option.
